occasion, opportunity, chance 和 possibility 分不清?这四个词是我们日常生活中常用的表示“机会”的词,它们意思相近,但在不同的语境中又有着不同的用法。往下看吧~

occasion:【əˈkeɪʒn】时机;特别的事情;理由

1️⃣an occasion 指发生特定事件或出现特定情况的时刻。

2️⃣an occasion 也可指事件本身,尤其是婚礼或公共仪式等重要事情。

3️⃣occasion指人或环境为做某事提供了时机。【这种用法十分正式】


例句:

1️⃣I've met him on several occasions. 我曾见过他几次。

2️⃣Their wedding turned out to be quite an occasion. 他们的婚礼办得相当隆重。

3️⃣It should have been an occasion for rejoicing, but she could not feel any real joy. 原本应该是高兴的时刻,她却丝毫未感到快乐。


opportunity:【ˌɒpəˈtjuːnəti】机会

to have theopportunity or the chance to do sth有机会做某事。opportunity要比chance正式,注意,不能说to have the possibility to do sth。 


例句:

1️⃣You'll have the opportunity to ask any questions at the end. 你们最后将有机会提问任何问题。

2️⃣I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues for their support. 我谨借此机会感谢同事的支持。



chance:【tʃæns】机会;可能性;碰巧


chance多指偶然的机会,含有侥幸的意味在内,有时可与opportunity互换;但chance可表示可能性,而opportunity不能。


例句:

1️⃣The chances are a million to one against being struck by lightning. 遭雷击的可能性是微乎其微的。

2️⃣Tonight is your last chance to catch the play at your local theatre. 今晚是你在本地剧院看上这出戏的最后一次机会。



possibility:【ˌpɑːsəˈbɪləti】可能性;潜力


指某事发生或办成的可能性,有可能发生或办成某事,可以说there is a possibility 或a possibility exists,也可以说sth is a possibility


例句:

1️⃣It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that we'll all meet again one day. 我们大家将来有一天再度聚在一起,并非绝不可能。

2️⃣The course offers a range of exciting possibilities for developing your skills. 这门课程可提供一整套新鲜活泼的技能训练。

3️⃣The house is in a bad state of repair but it has possibilities. 这房子虽亟待修缮,但仍有可资利用的价值。
